Photographs Around Town

Fortunately, the main office building is on the side of the road away from the river and on higher ground. It seems to be doing OK. Unfortunately the Museum a little ways down the hill and on the other side of the road is currently closed for repairs.
The current main dorm building (named after my old teacher) is way up a hill and well protected from the river. Due to Covid, it was mostly empty this year.
Not much left in the middle of town. Hard to believe at one point in time a couple hundred students lived and worked here
I remember when this used to be our in-town office building for the Contract Survey Program. Now it sits empty and is slated for demolition.
Under normal circumstances the Illinois River in it’s banks is hundreds of yards away from here. That being said all of the marks on this building are from the river at flood stage.
Some folks visualize better in color..here is another shot of where the central dorm campus used to be before it was condemned and torn down.
Gardner’s store is looking a lot worse for the wear. Currently someone is attempting to restore and re-purpose this building. Best of luck to them!
A close up of the water damage to the front of Gardner’s Store
This beautiful lawn is where the main Contract Archeology office used to be.. All that is left is the Artifact washing area and the storage/drying room.
This is one of the oldest buildings in town. Originally a gas service station. It has been through many owners over the years (including Red Eye Schumann). Recently turned into a bar and dining establishment. With the loss of the Kampsville Inn, it is needed.
